Global Trends in Tropical Storms
In today’s world, it’s unlikely for you to hear about powerful storms and hurricanes without scientists blaming it on climate change. The truth is that man-made warming does not cause hurricanes. In fact, before hurricanes Harvey and Irma in 2017, the United States was actually in a 12-year hurricane drought.
More than that, in the last 160 years the average number of hurricanes per decade reaching landfall has fallen. These are the conclusion drawn by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which is part of the United Nations, and by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which is part of US Department of Commerce.
“No robust trends in annual numbers of tropical storms, hurricanes and major hurricane counts have been identified over the past 100 years in the North Atlantic basin.” IPCC (2018)
IPCC also states that there have been no observed trends in global tropical cyclone frequency over the past century either. Even though, there have always been cycles, all in all, nowadays we live in a time of unusually stable temperatures.
Global Temperatures in The Last 11.000 Years
Maybe you are thinking about that day when there were 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit), in your city, on 24th of December. But again, you cannot just say that global warming is real only because there were abnormal temperatures on a certain day, last year. That is weather. Something that happens in real time. Climate change can only be measured over a longer period of time.
