Improve Your Speaking and Writing as a Non-Native English Speaker

By someone who is barely halfway

If you want to become better at speaking and writing in a foreign language, consistency is vital. In the case of English, there are plenty of options online on how to do that.

There are many reasons you might want to improve your English, one of the most obvious of all, according to Statista, being that it is the most spoken language, with almost 1.5 billion speakers worldwide.

Even if there are many different approaches to learning English, in this article, I will present what worked the best for me.

Besides the obvious “be patient” and “speak more”, this being one of the reasons why I moved to London, there are some steps which I still follow up to this date, which showed me that learning English depends mainly on the methods used.

Improve Your Vocabulary by Learning New Words

Whenever you want to start learning a new language, you should first familiarize yourself with that language’s words.

Considering that you clicked on this article, I assumed that you already know the basics, so the next step would be to learn related words with the ones you already know.

For this, I have used the Related Words website.

Let’s say you are interested in cooking, travelling or writing.

This platform can help you find new words related to the ones from above and many others while sorting them alphabetically or by relevance or commonness.

If you choose to sort your search by commonness, you will be shown the most common words related to the word you searched for.

What I like the most is that you can find related words to adjectives like beautiful or smart, or verbs, like do or learn. And although its algorithm is not perfect, Related Words provides you with a good enough tool to improve your vocabulary and become more proficient in English.

Learn How to Use Words in Context

The next step is to learn how to use the words in context, commonly.

Vocabulary Builder by Magoosh is one of the best ways for you to do this. Whether you have an Android or an iPhone, just give it a try.

The app is designed for those who want to prepare for the GRE, GMAT, ACT or SAT exams, which are intended to test the skills of those who wish to graduate from a business school program.

If you didn’t hear about these tests, but at some point, you will want to take the TOEFL or IELTS exams, you can use this app as well.

Each of these tests contains three to four sections, depending on the words’ level of difficulty.

Once you choose one, you will have to select the best definition for a specific word. After that, you will find out if you answered correctly or not.

At the same time, you will be able to listen to the correct pronunciation of the word, and you will be given a phrase in which that word is used.

In time, by using this fun app, your skills to create more vivid and accurate English phrases will increase, and soon enough, maybe you will also be interested in one of those exams from above.

Multiple Choice Exercises Are a Must

If you want to improve your English or any other foreign language, these are among the most effective and challenging exercises.

When combined with an option to hear each of the phrases’ correct pronunciation, the learning process is even faster.

Clozemaster is a website and an app that offers the possibility to learn a new language this way. Their motto says it all: “Clozemaster is gamified language learning through mass exposure to vocabulary in context.

You have more than 50 languages to choose from. First, you need to select your native language. If you can’t find yours, choose a similar one. You will understand in a moment why.

The most important thing, after that, is to choose the language you want to learn. In our case, English. Then, click play. Now all you have to do is to focus on choosing the word that best fits the context.

What I like the most about this app is that underneath the phrase you need to complete, you have the translation in your native language or a similar one.

This way, you can see right away the translation of the word you need to select in English and how to use it in context.

After choosing it, you can select to hear the correct pronunciation of the whole phrase, which is the icing on the cake.

While learning a new language might not be the easiest thing to do, it’s certainly not the most boring thing you can do. Especially when you have the right tools at your disposal.

Learning a foreign language can help you access new information, advance in your professional career or meet new people.

If you are the type of person who doesn’t want to take classes, but you want to keep it casual, use the above websites and apps, and I’m sure your English skills will get even better.
