The Most Powerful Rocket Ever Built
The Cold War
During the late 50s and early 60s the tensions between the two most powerful nations of the world reached unexpected heights. United States and Soviet Union were now fighting to conquer the space.
At that time, the Russians were already made some important first steps towards this goal. They were the first to put a satellite to orbit around the earth. They were the first to put a man into space, that being Yury Gagarin. Also they were the first to put the first women into space, Valentina Tereshkova.
It was time for the United States to make its own move otherwise it would have lost more “ground”.
Then, in May 1961, President Kennedy made the announcement that shocked the world. He promised to the American people that until the end of the decade United States will put the first man on the moon.
Indeed, it was such a big goal, but for one of the most powerful nations in the world, this was the normal course of thinking and acting.
It was the period of the Cold War. A war between the United Stated and the Soviet Union. It was a period of geopolitical tension which has expanded beyond the limits of the world that many of us can perceive.
